Common pool repairs and 2026 prices
These are installed prices, parts plus labor, for an in-ground residential pool. Above-ground pools usually cost less.
- Pump motor only: $350 to $900. Whole variable-speed pump: $1,200 to $2,800. Federal efficiency rules mean most replacement pumps over one horsepower are variable-speed now, which costs more up front but cuts electricity use by half or more.
- Filter: new cartridge element $60 to $200; new filter unit $600 to $1,800; sand change $200 to $400.
- Heater: repair $250 to $800; gas heater replacement $2,500 to $6,000; heat pump $3,500 to $7,000.
- Leaks: detection $300 to $700; fixing a skimmer or fitting leak $300 to $900; underground plumbing repair $800 to $3,500 or more if deck has to be cut.
- Lights: LED fixture replacement $350 to $900; niche or conduit problems add to that.
- Skimmer replacement: $800 to $2,000, mostly labor for cutting and re-pouring concrete.
- Tile and surface: a section of loose waterline tile $300 to $1,500; a plaster patch or crack injection $500 to $3,000. Widespread damage is a resurfacing job.
- Salt cell: $600 to $1,300. Automation or control board: $500 to $2,000.
What drives the price up or down
- Equipment brand and size. A 3-horsepower pump for a large pool with a spa and water features costs far more than a 1.5-horsepower pump for a plunge pool.
- Access. Anything under the deck means cutting and patching concrete. Equipment pads with no clearance also add labor.
- Age and parts availability. Discontinued heaters and controllers can force a replacement even when the fault is small.
- Permits. Gas and electrical work often requires a permit and inspection, typically $100 to $400.
- Timing. Emergency or weekend calls run 1.5 to 2 times normal labor rates. Peak summer waits can be a week or more.
- Region. Labor in Southern California and the Northeast runs higher than Arizona, Texas, or Florida.
Repair or replace?
A useful rule: if the repair costs more than half of a new unit and the equipment is past the midpoint of its life, replace it.
- Pumps last 8 to 12 years. A failing motor on a single-speed pump older than eight years is a good reason to move to variable-speed, which can save $300 to $600 a year in power in sunbelt states.
- Heaters last 10 to 15 years. A heat exchanger failure on a unit past year ten is almost always a replacement.
- Filters last 10 to 15 years. A cracked tank is a replacement; a torn cartridge or worn grids is a cheap fix.
- Salt cells last 3 to 7 years and are a normal consumable, not a sign of a bigger problem.
Questions to ask a pool repair pro
- What is the diagnostic or service-call fee, and is it credited if I approve the repair?
- Can you itemize parts and labor, and show me the failed part?
- What is the warranty on parts and on labor? One to three years on parts and one year on labor is typical.
- Will the replacement pump be variable-speed, and does this job need a permit?
- Are you licensed and insured for pool work in this state?
- What else on the equipment pad is near the end of its life, so I can plan for it?

How much does it cost to replace a pool pump?
A new variable-speed pump installed costs $1,200 to $2,800 in 2026. Replacing only the motor on an existing pump runs $350 to $900, but that is usually only worth it on a pump under eight years old.
How much does pool leak detection cost?
Professional leak detection with pressure testing and dye or electronic listening costs $300 to $700. The repair is separate: $300 to $900 for a skimmer or fitting, and $800 to $3,500 or more for underground plumbing under a deck.
Should I repair or replace my pool heater?
If the heater is under ten years old and the fix is a sensor, ignitor, or board under $800, repair it. If it is past ten years or the heat exchanger has failed, a new gas heater at $2,500 to $6,000 is the better long-term spend.
Does homeowners insurance cover pool repairs?
Usually not for wear and tear, leaks, or equipment failure. Sudden damage from a covered event, such as a storm dropping a tree into the pool, may be covered. Check your policy and deductible before filing a claim for a small repair.
How much is a pool repair service call?
Most companies charge $75 to $200 to come out and diagnose the problem. Many credit that fee toward the repair if you approve the work on the spot, so ask before you book.
