To size a system, take your annual electricity use in kilowatt-hours and divide by 1,200 to 1,600 (lower in the Northeast, higher in the Southwest). As a rough bill-based guide: a $100 monthly bill points to 5 to 6 kW, $200 to 8 to 10 kW, and $300 or more to 11 to 14 kW. Prices per watt drop a little as systems get bigger because permits, design, and labor are spread over more panels.

What drives the price up or down

  • Equipment. Standard panels are 400 to 450 watts now. Premium panels and microinverters or optimizers add $0.20 to $0.40 per watt, and they are worth it on shaded or multi-angle roofs.
  • Roof type and condition. Tile, metal, and flat roofs add $0.20 to $0.50 per watt over asphalt shingle. If the roof has under ten years of life left, replace it first ($10,000 to $25,000), because removing and reinstalling panels later costs $1,500 to $4,000.
  • Electrical. A main panel upgrade, needed in many homes with 100-amp service, is $2,000 to $4,500.
  • Ground mounts add $0.50 to $1.00 per watt for racking and trenching.
  • Batteries. One 10 to 15 kWh battery installed is $10,000 to $18,000. Whole-home backup with two batteries and a transfer switch can reach $30,000.
  • How you pay. Solar loans often carry a dealer fee of 15 to 30 percent that is built into the system price. The same system bought with cash or a home equity line can cost thousands less. Always ask for the cash price.
  • Installer type. Local installers with their own crews usually beat national sales-driven companies on price. Several large national installers went out of business in 2024 and 2025, leaving customers without warranty service, so financial stability matters.

Incentives in 2026

Solar incentives in 2026 come from states and utilities, and they vary a lot by ZIP code. Common types include state income tax credits (Arizona and New York, for example, offer a percentage of system cost up to a cap), property tax exemptions so the system does not raise your assessment, sales tax exemptions on equipment, utility rebates paid per watt or per battery, and solar renewable energy certificates in some Eastern states that pay you for production. How your utility credits exported power matters as much as any rebate. Full retail net metering is being replaced by lower "net billing" export rates in many states, which lengthens payback for systems without a battery.

Is it worth it?

Without federal help, typical payback in 2026 is 8 to 14 years on a system that is warranted for 25. Payback is fastest where electricity is expensive (California, the Northeast, Hawaii) and where net metering is still generous. It is slowest where power is cheap and exports are credited at wholesale rates. Panels lose about half a percent of output per year, so a system still produces roughly 85 percent of its original power at year 25. A battery rarely shortens payback on its own; its value is backup power and shifting use away from peak time-of-use rates.
